York Museum Gardens | A Remarkable Setting for Extraordinary Events

Where Heritage Meets Inspiration

In the heart of York, the historic Museum Gardens, provide an unforgettable backdrop for celebrations, performances, and cultural gatherings. With sweeping lawns, ancient ruins, and atmospheric views, the Gardens blend natural beauty with centuries of history.

Our Mission

York Museums Trust works to cherish and enhance the collections, buildings, and landscapes in our care—using them to inspire curiosity, learning, and enjoyment.
By partnering with event organisers and creative producers and private hirers we bring these remarkable spaces to life in ways that honour their past and engage new audiences.

Dry hire of certain spaces, including after-hours private rental, is available on request.

Event Spaces

The Pavilion Lawn
Enclosed | Atmospheric | Ideal for Performance & Production
A naturally defined arena between the Abbey walls and the ruins of St Mary’s, offering:

  • 1,000+ m² of usable space
  • Excellent sightlines
  • Discreet set-up areas
  • Available year-round, though ground conditions may limit use November–February.

The Main Lawn
Iconic | Spacious | Perfect for Large-Scale Events
York’s most impressive open space, with two distinct staging orientations:

  • St Mary’s Abbey Ruins as a dramatic backdrop
  • A natural amphitheatre facing the Yorkshire Museum
  • To protect this signature landscape, only two externally organised events are permitted each year in addition to YMT’s own programme.

Smaller Lawns: Multangular Tower & Peacock Lawns
Flexible | Intimate | Ideal for Activations & Pop-Ups
Perfect for demonstrations, walkabout performances, and small displays—combining charm, history, and adaptability.
